We are a network of people and organizations who live and work in the North of England that have a shared commitment to highlight and respond to health and social inequities, exclusion and discrimination that impact reproductive justice

What we mean by...

The North of England...

For ReproNorth there is not a single ‘North of England.’ We know that people have different ways of understanding what ‘the North' is. Rather than fixed places or boundaries on a map, we consider the North to be diverse cultural, social, economic and environmental factors united by places, ideas and characteristics, e.g. our accents. We acknowledge there are many strengths and assets in the North, and inequities too.

Reproductive Justice...

We are inspired by Sistersong who define reproductive justice as:

“the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities”

We take an inclusive and network-led approach to reproductive justice meaning we are flexible to ensure the topics that matter most to local communities are prioritised.

Who's involved

ReproNorth includes activists, organisations, researchers and anyone interested, however you define yourself!

We have established this website with the aim of bringing together individuals and organisations, and to collect and share important information.

When we say 'ReproNorth members' we meet people affiliated with and who have taken part in ReproNorth activities. ReproNorth is not a membership organisation and there is no fee to be part of the network.

Film Screening of The 8th

In 2023 we screened the documentary film The 8th in collaboration with Feminist Movie Monday in Lancaster, Lancashire.

This event hosted a speaker and participatory activities so about choice and coercion in reproductive decision making.

ReproFest 2022

A full day of art, speakers, workshops and more, hosted in Preston, Lancashire in 2022

The images you see on this website were made by attendees at ReproFest.

The Reproductive Justice framework helps us to examine ways that structural factors (such as our political systems and everyday social environments) limit reproductive ‘choices’, including: social welfare; incarceration; child removals; taxation; environmental degradation; digital surveillance; immigration policies; food insecurity; housing conditions, affordability and availability; and healthcare monitoring and delivery.

Everyone has the same rights in principle, but not everyone has the same choices in practice. Reproductive Justice highlights the

experiences of overlooked, devalued, and marginalised populations. For example, people with learning disabilities; People living with HIV; LGBTQ+ populations; people in contact with the criminal justice system; and people living in poverty.

Reproductive Justice advocates for involving communities most affected by reproductive oppression and locating power in communities. Local communities are best placed to contextualise local reproductive (in)justice, offer solutions rooted in community strengths, and mobilise local action
